VPBank – One of the leading joint stock commercial banks in Vietnam, has successfully cooperated with SAVYINT – the official implementation partner of WSO2 in Vietnam, to deploy WSO2 API Management (Apim) and WSO2 Identity Server solutions. This project not only helps VPBank optimize its technology infrastructure but also upgrades the entire user management system from OpenLDAP to RDBMS, ensuring stability and security for digital banking activities.

VPBank’s problem
Founded in 1993, VPBank – Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank has more than 250 branches and transaction offices nationwide, focusing on providing financial services to individual customers, businesses and organizations, leading with the strategy of digitization and retail banking.
In 2019, VPBank decided to buy WSO2 API Manager (Apim) and WSO2 Identity Server from WSO2.
At the first stage, VPBank cooperated with a deployment partner of WSO2 based in Sri Lanka, but many problems arose:
- Lack of prompt support
- Do not onsite in the event of a system malfunction
- System implementation does not match the handover documents
- Incomplete and sketchy documents
Therefore, VPBank requested WSO2 to propose another implementation partner in Vietnam.
During the implementation process, VPBank also needs to upgrade and convert the entire user store from OpenLDAP to a relational data system (RDBMS).
Accordingly, the OpenLDAP system previously used by VPBank is used in storing and retrieving information about users, access rights, network information, etc. according to the directory tree structure. However, over time, with the huge amount of data, OpenLDAP is no longer effective with complex data structures, difficult to scale at large scale. Therefore, the transition to RDBMS is a must for storing and managing large, complex data well, supporting powerful queries, optimizing performance and easily scaling according to the needs of the organization.

During the implementation process, taking advantage of the sensitivity in experience and expertise, SAVYINT conducted a survey of the current situation and proposed to implement a series of technical changes:
– Set up required environments, backups, settings…
– Install & configure WSO2 Apim for Dev, UAT, sit, Production DC-DR environments
– WSO2 IS installation & configuration for environments
– ELK log management
– Data migration and DB
– Migrate userstore from OpenLDAP to RDBMS
– Adjustment, standardization of environments and implementation of transfer training
Successfully helped VPBank implement and upgrade the conversion of the entire userstore from OpenLDAP to RDBMS
After the process of implementing a series of technical proposals, SAVYINT has successfully helped VPBank implement WSO2 APIM & Identity Server, providing annual subscriptions.
Besides, SAVYINT also ensures the stability and safety of the user management system, quickly helps VPBank upgrade and convert the entire user store system (userstore) from OpenLDAP to relational database management system (RDBMS). With the new system, VPBank can easily manage complex data, flexibly support transactions, ensure data integrity, and also integrate well with other enterprise systems, ensuring higher performance and security than the old system.
